Fornasetti Carpets

Fornasetti wallpapers are beautiful, well-made and bang on trend. My favorite ‘Tema e Variazioni’ inspired by the enigmatic face of a beautiful woman he came across in an old French magazine.

Piero Fornasetti was born in Milan (1913-1988) and became an eclectic painter, sculptor, interior designer, craftsman, engraver of art books and organizer of international exhibitions and events. Believing strongly in disegno – the practice of sketching and copying – as the legacy of the Italian artistic tradition, his unique style shows a strong sense of irony. He worked independently of the avant-garde and his production of exquisitely made objects, textiles and furniture, some of which are in the V&A Museum, is one of the largest of the 20th century.

Fornasetti's latest collection transfers the work this Milanese artist and interior designer into bold carpets. I love the bold whimsical nature of them.

Current Project

As a follow-up to the post I did yesterday, this is a picture of my desk with my inspiration samples for a design scheme I am putting together for a Living Room, Dining Room and Powder Room. The Fornasetti (Riflesso) wallpaper bottom right and bottom left Fornasetti (Tema) are the starting points for my inspiration. Adjoing walls to the Tema will be papered Phillip Jefferies Manila Hemp color Elephant.

The ceiling of the Powder Room using Riflesso will be papered in Phillip Jefferies Silver Leaf paper. I like to treat ceilings in a special way. They are one of the most neglected areas and in a room like a Powder Room treating the ceiling suface can have a big impact. Paint Colors are Farrow and Ball Dauphin & Fawn, both colors are rich, complex shades of taupe. Living Room draperies are Silk in a beautiful Champagne color. The upholstery will be in Cream colored Wool and Cappuccino colored Wool Mohair.

I was spellbound when I first saw this wallpaper on the blog of The Peak of Chick. Then I saw it again a day later in Elle Decor UK Edition June 2007. My clients had given me the magazine with some pages turned over of things they liked and there I saw it again. So I have decided I want to use this paper somewhere and if I don't get to use it for a client I am going to wallpaper my own Powder Room with it. I think it would make a memorable visit to that room.
